# What Is a DRep? Cardano Voting, Simply Explained

Every ADA holder can now help decide how Cardano spends its money. Here is what a DRep is, how voting works, and how to choose one in two minutes.

Imagine a big village with a shared bank account. Every family put some money in, and now people send ideas: build a new road, fix the school roof, pay a doctor to visit every month. Someone has to decide which ideas get the money.

In a small village, everyone can sit under the big tree and talk. In a village of millions, that does not work. Most people are busy. They have jobs, kids, and their own lives. So they choose a person they trust to read the ideas and vote for them.

That is exactly what a **DRep** is on Cardano.

## The short answer

DRep means **Delegated Representative**. A DRep is a person or a group that votes on Cardano decisions for the ADA holders who chose them.

Cardano has a treasury, a shared pot of ADA that grows a little every five days. Since the end of 2024, the people who hold ADA decide how that money is spent and how the network changes. Not a company. Not a small team in an office. The holders.

## What do people vote on?

Proposals on Cardano are called **governance actions**. The most common ones are:

- **Treasury withdrawals.** A team asks for ADA to build something: a tool, a research project, an event, marketing for Cardano.
- **Parameter changes.** Small technical settings, for example how big a block can be, or how much a transaction costs.
- **Hard forks.** Big upgrades to the whole network.
- **Info actions.** A simple "what do you think?" poll with no money attached.

Some proposals ask for a few thousand ADA. Some ask for many millions. Every one of them needs enough "Yes" votes from DReps to pass.

## Why not vote yourself?

You can! Anyone can register as a DRep and vote. But it takes real time. A single treasury proposal can be thirty pages long, with budgets, milestones and legal details. There are usually several open at the same time.

Most people prefer to do what they do in normal elections: pick someone whose values they share, and check from time to time that this person really votes.

## Is it safe to delegate my vote?

Yes. This is the part people often worry about, so let us be very clear:

- **Your ADA stays in your wallet.** Nobody can move it, spend it or lock it.
- **You can still stake with any pool.** Choosing a DRep and choosing a stake pool are two separate things. You can do both.
- **You can change your mind any time.** Pick a new DRep tomorrow if you want.
- **It costs almost nothing.** Only the normal network fee of about 0.2 ADA.

Your **voting power** is simply the amount of ADA you hold. If you have 1,000 ADA, your DRep votes with 1,000 more ADA behind them.

There is one more practical reason to choose a DRep. Today, Cardano wallets ask you to delegate your vote before you can withdraw your staking rewards. So every ADA holder should make this choice at least once.

## Two special options

If you do not want a person to vote for you, there are two built in choices:

- **Always Abstain.** Your ADA is counted as "not voting". This is a polite way to say "I do not want to take part".
- **Always No Confidence.** This is a signal that you do not trust the current Constitutional Committee, the small group that checks whether proposals follow Cardano's constitution.

Both are fine. But they do not help any good idea pass, and they do not stop any bad one.

## How to choose a good DRep

A good DRep is not the most famous one. A good DRep is one who **shows up and explains**. Here is a simple checklist:

1. **Do they vote?** A DRep who does not vote for 20 epochs (about 100 days) becomes inactive, and their voting power stops counting.
2. **Do they explain their votes?** Look for a short reason next to each vote. You should be able to understand why they said Yes or No.
3. **Do you share their values?** Some DReps want to spend more on growth. Others want to protect the treasury. Neither is wrong. Pick the one that thinks like you.
4. **Are they a real, reachable person?** A website, an X account, a history of activity. Someone you could ask a question.

You can browse DReps and their voting history on [gov.tools](https://gov.tools/) or explorers like [AdaStat](https://adastat.net/dreps).

## How to delegate, step by step

1. Open your Cardano wallet. Eternl, Lace, Yoroi and Vespr all support this.
2. Find the **Governance** or **Voting** section.
3. Search for a DRep by name or paste their DRep ID.
4. Confirm the transaction.

That is it. From the next epoch, your ADA adds weight to their votes.

## A real example

This week I voted on three treasury proposals as a DRep. One asked for 22 million ADA to buy physical copper and turn it into a token, with the main token living on another blockchain. I voted **No**: too much price risk for the shared treasury. Another asked for money to build open, shared infrastructure, paid in milestones and checked by an independent group. I voted **Yes**.

You may agree or not, and that is the point. You can see each vote and its reason, and decide if this is someone you want speaking for you.

## The big idea

For most of history, a few people decided how shared money was spent, and everyone else just heard about it later. Cardano tries something different: every holder has a voice, and every vote is public forever on the blockchain.

It only works if people take part. Choosing a DRep is the smallest, easiest way to do that.

**If this helped,** here are two small ways to support our work. You can delegate your voting power to our DRep, **Alex BKV**, at [cardanodrep.org](https://cardanodrep.org/). I read every proposal and give a short public reason for each vote. And if you are looking for a stake pool, we would be happy to have you at [BKV](https://bkvpool.com/#delegate), a small independent pool with 0% margin. No pressure at all: any active DRep and any honest pool make Cardano stronger.
